Understanding Your Property Taxes
Johnson County, Kansas

Calculating Taxes
The appraised value (also called fair market value) is set by the county appraiser based on state laws. It can change each year depending on market trends. The assessed value is a percentage of the appraised value—In Johnson County, it's 11.5% for residential properties, and 25% for commercial properties. To figure out property taxes, the assessed value is multiplied by the mill levy rate, then divided by 1,000. One mill equals $1 for every $1,000 of assessed value.

More info
Properties with a $0 appraised value are usually exempt from taxes. These may include public spaces like rights-of-way or government buildings. If a property appears in the drop-down list but doesn't show any data, it’s likely a new parcel that wasn’t included when the tax roll was finalized.
